I like to see myself as a sleek minimalist who believes the negative space on a page speaks louder than the positive. While that might be true, the other half of me always breaks through to cause a little mess. I’ve chosen to call myself an aspiring minimalist because minimalism is too contained for me. This was our first real experience with designing metaphors and dealing heavily with concepts. The Secret Life of Bees is a book that deals with the emotional struggle of a young girl, Lily, who runs away from her abusive father. She finds herself in the South Carolina town that holds the key to her mother’s past. That’s the first question I had to ask myself when faced with creating a monogram for my” brand”. Creating monograms as a process involved endless word lists, color pallets and mood boards. As a person, we are so many different things, it’s hard to narrow it down in order to make a logical design. The final words I chose to describe myself and my aesthetic really hit the nail on the head. I am interested in comfortable, elegant design that lets the viewer breath. Each quote represented the designer who said it and the design has to hint at the designer’s aesthetics. We explored through sketches six basic elements of graphic design. We used geometry, line, gesture, silhouette, shading, and minimal. We had to discover the small details of our animals and figure out how much and how little we could show of them and have it still be recognizable. I chose a raccoon.
